The Northamptonshire Championship Club which is now in its third season seems to have come of age this year. There are of course a whole raft of components that make up a successful club, or indeed any pigeon organisation, and often it needs only the odd component to be missing for all sorts of turmoil to ensue. Perhaps we are just lucky; who knows, albeit I believe one makes ones own luck in life, so lets just call it good fortune that seventeen of the top flyers in the county have come together with an established aim to fly the BICC program plus a further race from Bordeaux, and the competition at this very early stage is proving red hot. Throw in some decent (very decent) prize money; lots of friendly banter; proper organisation; good convoying and you maybe have a club worthy of now being called the premier club in the county. If birdage alone defines a successful club, then the NCC is way out in front with 378 birds in the trailer for the first Newbury sprint/trainer followed by 409 for the first Portsmouth.

Both races were definitely not blow-homes, with Newbury at around 60-70 miles suffering a coldish north wind, whilst Portsmouth at just over the 100 miles also provided a sting in the tail for although a sunny clear day with only a light north wind, there were a significant number of empty perches by close of play. The old adage about the sun and the moon being in the sky at the same time cropped up along with (topically) volcanic ash, but at the end of the day nobody ever seems to offer any scientific proof. In my book if the lead birds to my own loft are on the pace I question why the remainder are not right there with them? Enough speculation about the also rans ~ At Newbury Albert Farrow, who incidentally is now on ETS took a clean sweep of the podium with 1128; 1127 & 1123 with only 26 YPM separating the first fifteen places.

Barry & Troy Hobbs were the only ones capable of picking a pool bird with their 20th, placed bird but made absolutely sure of pocketing the pool money at Portsmouth with an outright win on 1287. They pipped Rob Jarratt to second place on 1285 but managed a third on 1284 beating Peter Chamberlain by a further 3 yards into fourth. Another tight training race which sets up the first BICC race from Falaise at the beginning of May
